For the month of November room one and room two children have been learning what it means to be thankful for the people and things that they have in their lives. Among talking about how the pilgrims and the Native Americans met and the meaning of Thanksgiving, we also talked to the children about if you give something you almost always get something back in return. Earlier in the week we read a story called Stone Soup by Jon. J. Muth. It’s about three monks that encounter frightened villagers who lock their doors and windows and darken their homes. The villagers have long been ravenged by harsh times and their hearts have grown hard toward everyone that they meet. But when the monks cleverly entice them to make soup from stones, the villagers discovered how much they have to give and how much more comes back in return.
So in celebration of Thanksgiving we had each child bring in a different vegetable to contribute to our stone soup. Each child had the opportunity to use a plastic knife and help cut potatoes, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower and lots of other yummy vegetables. After the vegetables were chopped, we put them in the pot with the stones, added the broth and cooked it. It was yummy to have with our lunch and the children learned that if we all help out we all get something back in return.
